Traveling to Nuevo Rocafuerte
An interesting journey to the Peruvian border town of Rocafuerte can be achieved by an inconsistent canoe service but it is recommended to rent your own. The journey takes in Coca and leads further downriver to Limoncocha, on route you'll also pass through Pompeya which has a mission and a small museum displaying native Napo artifacts. From here you can travel a further two hours to a small island inhabited by hundreds of monkeys "Monkey Island".

Once you have arrived at Limoncocha there are good areas for viewing an abundance of various bird life around a lagoon housed inside a Biological reserve.

In Coca you can also hire boats but to enter Nuevo Rocafuerte a permit from the nearby military is needed, but do note you'll have to leave your passport, the route is around 8 hours and you can journey smoothly downriver seeing the nature via hammock. In order to journey back a cargo boat is usually available on Mondays but if you miss it or it doesn't run wait till Friday.

Do note there are no restaurants in Nuevo Rocafuerte so take plenty of food before departing. Also don't try to enter Peru as the frontier via this route is still not open although it is expected to be passable shortly, check with your canoe hirers.

There is also a Ferry service costing around $10 to Coca that takes nearly 3 days with stopovers in Sinchichieta with food stops in Pañacocha (See jungle lodges).
