| From
Quito heading north, the most common route to the Oriente is the Baeza to Lago Agrio road. It Crosses the Eastern Cordillera passing by the Antisana (5,700 m) volcano and then by the villages of Papallacta, Cuyuja, Baeza and Borja. From Papallacta to Baeza the road offers excellent views of the Antisana volcano, paramo, waterfalls and beautiful lakes. The Antisana has huge glaciers and a large quantity of snow. To climb this mountain is a matter of experienced mountaineers. The access to the volcano can be made from Pintag, or from Hacienda El Tambo situated above the Papallacta lake. From Pintag, head straight to Hacienda Pinantura, then to Hacienda
El Hato. From Hacienda El Hato is a 4 to 5 hours' walk to Crespo Norte. Permissions must be obtained from Fundación Antisana (Av. Mariana de Jesús and La Isla. Tel. 2433851. Quito) to go further Hacienda Pinantura. The second access is northwest of Antisana from Hacienda El Tambo to Laguna del Volcán. The region itself is surrounded by pristine rivers, a huge vegetation and beautiful waterfalls. Due to the magnificent weather, there are plenty of orchids and bromeliads. The area is also filled with many hiking trails and is the best for trout fishing. |
